Chicks for Christ – Feb 21st & 22nd

Chicks for Christ – Feb. 21 and 22

Scripture for the week
“For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown in which we will glory in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes? Is it not you? Indeed, you are our glory and joy.” 1 Thess 2:19-20

Catholic Moment
”God is certainly more desirous of our best welfare than we are ourselves; and He knows the ways and means of promoting it better than we, for they are in His hands as Ruler of the Universe; wherefore, in all the accidents which befall us, most certainly that happens which is the best.”
-Saint Augustine, Father and Doctor of the Church

Discussion Questions Chapter 2
1. “We have to choose joy and keep choosing it every day “(p 31). Have you ever set aside time in your day to “choose joy”? Take a few minutes now to think about what it means to choose joy. What does joy mean in your life right now?

2. “I have a friend that radiates joy” (p 33). Have you ever known someone who radiated joy? What was it about them that showed the joy in their hearts? Where in your heart do you find your own joy? Can you visit that place in your heart more often?

3. “Hope frees us form the need to predict the future and allows us to live in the present” (p 41).We often talk about “hope” in terms of specific things we want to happen: “I hope I get a raise in salary; I hope my aunt will recover from her illness.” How is this different from hope Nouwen describes?

Chicks for Christ Agenda Feb 7th & 8th

Scripture for the week
Jesus said to his disciples, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid. ‘ John 14:27
Catholic Moment
The four stages of lectio divina (divine reading) are beautifully summarized by a Carthusian Prior, Guigo: “We read a text of scripture or poetry, or religious writing. We meditate to enter deeply into the text’s meaning. In prayer we respond to God in the light of this meaning. In contemplation we rest simply in the presence of God, needing no further words. Reading puts the food into the mouth. Meditation chews it and breaks it up. Prayer extracts its flavor. Contemplation is the sweetness itself which gladdens and refreshes.”

Discussion Questions Chapter 1
1. “A new beginning! We must learn to live each day, each hour, yes, each minute as anew beginning, as a unique opportunity to make everything new” (pg 16). Try to imagine what your life would be like if you began to live in the moment. How does this challenge and excite you?

2. “The world of the past has gone” (Rev 21:4, p 17). When you think about your past, what images and memories are strongest for you? Do you think of family, career, or friends? Do you remember most vividly the pleasant memories or the times when you wished you had done things differently? Write down 2 memories of great paid from your past. Write down 2 preoccupations (“what ifs”) you feel about the future.

3.”God is a God of the present. God is always in the moment, be that moment hard or easy, joyful or painful.” (p 19). Look at your responses above. When you think of them, what do you imagine God would say about them? Do you think of God as keeping a record of flaws and mistakes? What does Nouwen suggest about God’s presence?

Chicks for Christ – Jan 31st or Feb 1st

Dear Sweet Ladies,

We are looking forward to our winter/spring session beginning Tuesday evening/Wednesday morning, January 31st/February 1st. NEXT WEEK! NEXT WEEK! Our book for this series is Here and Now by Henri Nouwen. Nouwen is one of the most respected and inspirational theology/spirituality writers of this century. It is our sincere hope and desire that you will be able to join your fellow sisters in Christ as we journey together. Our evening session is from 7-8:30 pm, our morning session is from 9:30-11am. We will distribute books and packets at the 1st session. If you already have a folder, could you please bring it with you. If you cannot find it, we will gladly provide a new one. The “in kind” donation for the session is 25 dollars to cover our book/material costs.

It is important that we can plan appropriately for our number of participants. We ask that you respond to this email if you plan on coming. If you would like to invite a friend to join us, fantastic, just tell them so show up at the first meeting.
