What is a Catechist?

A catechist is a teacher of our faith. As a catechist or support catechist, you will help our children grades 1-5 to understand and learn about being a Catholic, our prayers, and our faith traditions.

When are classes?

Elementary Faith Formation is offered 2 times a month basically every other week on Mondays and Tuesdays from either 3:30-4:45 or 5:15-6:30. There are 15 classes total from September- May.

Will I have any help or support?

ABSOLUTELY!! You will have support from an experienced catechist who will train, mentor and help you. Many of our teachers work together to share ideas and plans and to help each other. You will also have a parent volunteer helper in your class each week. Our prayer is for two catechists for each class; one as the lead and the other as the support catechist. We encourage you to, if possible, invite your spouse, your older children, or a friend to teach with you!

What if I do not know the Word of God very well?

All Catechists are supplied with a teacher’s edition which explains step by step what to cover in class. Remember, most often the children will not remember the exact scripture shared, but they will remember YOU, your love for them, and your welcoming attitude!

How much of a time commitment is it?

The time spent as a catechist depends on many factors; you would definitely need to be here for the entire 75 minutes of class, but there would also be some home preparation time needed. We have lots of resources: coloring pages, activity sheets, prayers and songs to help you to plan and manage class time.

Thank you for prayerfully considering helping the children of our faith community.
